Upcoming Workday Save-the-Date, Meeting Minutes Online, Park Updates

Parkwood Park Committee Announcements from Sheri Kennedy, Parkwood Park Committee Chair:

Parkwood Park Work Day, Saturday, December 3 from 9am to 12 noon.  Parkwood Park Committee would like to invite you to burn off those Thanksgiving calories by volunteering in the park on Saturday, December 3 from 9am to 12 noon (weather permitting).  We will be spreading the remaining mulch, removing invasive Chinese Hollies and if we have enough volunteers will be tackling the drainage issue at W Ponce de Leon near E Parkwood Rd.  Please sign in at the table at 452 W Parkwood Rd (Jim and Mary K Jarboe’s house).  Any questions, please contact Sheri Kennedy, 404 377 8218.

East Lake Traffic Circle Update.  Thank you Parkwood Neighbors for your generous donations!  The planting at the traffic circle is completed.  This time of year the perennials are starting to go dormant but stay tuned next year for the yellow flowered Black-eye Susan, the purple of the ‘Breakers’ Iris, the chartreuse leaves and blue flowers of the Veronica ‘Goodness Grows’ and last but not least the beautiful textures of the Autumn Joy Sedum.  Take a moment to walk to the island and see the tiny Stonecrop soon to be creeping it’s way around the boulders.   The Harbour Dwarf Nandina will add color and texture all year long.  The ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese Maple will leaf out in early spring and provide an nice understory canopy for the traffic circle.  A big thanks to Averill Jones, Jim and Sheri Kennedy for planting and mulching.   Thanks to Camille Harvey of Camille’s Gardening Concepts for her generously discounted planting plan and overseeing the boulder placement and planting design.  Thanks to the Fennessys for allowing us to connect up a long line of hoses to water in the plants.

W Ponce de Leon Planting Update.  Another big thank you to the Parkwood Garden Club members for your donations of over $1600 during our October membership drive.  The PPC is overwhelmed at your generosity and we have ordered the plants for the W Ponce de Leon area.  In keeping with our Mission we will be adding native plants–sweet shrubs and inkberries to the culvert area.   The addition of 2 female and one male winterberry will provide food for the birds this winter.  The two new white flowering dogwoods will be front and center a sea of existing yellow bells this spring.  Thanks to Woodlands Garden for donating a large leaf magnolia that will bring a whole new texture to the park and great excitement when the large golden leaves float to the ground each fall.
