UPDATE (Jan 8, 2011, 3:58 p.m.):
The following news was forwarded to Katie Black from neighbor Jim Powell. There is an added meeting at Fernbank about the redistricting due to the impending weather:
Because of the potential for inclement weather on Monday, we are adding a meeting tomorrow, SUNDAY, JANUARY 9, at 5:00 p.m., in the school cafeteria, to discuss the current preliminary redistricting plan and our community’s response and role in the process as it moves forward. We are not, at this time, eliminating Monday’s 6:30 meeting. We are simply adding Sunday afternoon as a precautionary measure. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you tomorrow and/or Monday.
A message from PGC President Katie Black:
PGC Members,
Many of you have expressed interest in the proposed Fernbank Elementary school redistricting effort. Neighbor Paul Thompson on W Parkwood Rd. just forwarded to me notice of an emergency Fernbank PTA meeting on Monday, Jan 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. I imagine if you have an interest in the redistricting, you are welcome.
Below is a map of the proposed redistricting, courtesy of DecaturMetro.com, via Druid Hills Civic Association:
The plan redirects children who mainly live west of Clifton from Fernbank Elementary to Briar Vista Elementary. The redistricting leaves PGC homes in the Fernbank district.
I welcome all comments as to the PGC’s role in the redistricting. Click here to email your input to PGC President Katie Black.
THE ISSUE:
The following quote is taken from the The Druid Hills Civic Association website:
The school redistricting proposal disclosed at last night’s Board of Education meeting drew the line right down Clifton. Anything west of Clifton would be out of Fernbank and sent to Briar Vista. There are going to be follow up public meetings held by the consulting firm as follows: 1/13 Miller Grove High School; 1/13 Chamblee HS; 1/18 McNair HS; 1/20 Stone Mountain MS, all at 6:30. Following these meetings, the interim superintendent is to make a recommendation to the Board of Education on 1/31. There are to be 2 additional public hearings on 2/22 and 2/24 (6:30pm) at the AIC auditorium, then on 2/28 the Board is going to issue its final approval.
You can visit the DeKalb County School System website for more information about scheduled redistricting and school consolidation meetings and workshops.
Thanks, and Happy New Year!
Katie Black
